2013-2014 Convocations Schedule
The weekly convocation series is a shared campus experience that brings students, faculty, and staff together for one hour for a lecture or presentation from specialists in a variety of disciplines. The goal of the convocation series is to stimulate thought and conversation on a wide range of subjects. Convocations are open to the public and free of charge.
You are invited to participate in the convocation program in a variety of ways:
- The best way is to personally attend the weekly convocations and ask a question of the speaker.
- If you are unable to attend in person, convocations are streamed live and available for on-demand viewing afterward by tuning in here. (Please note that there may be occasions when the speaker does not allow us to do this.)
- Recordings of past convocations have been archived here. Videos of many past convocations are also in the Gould Library collection.
- Carleton students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to submit suggestions for future convocation speakers with this online form.
Convocation: Phil Plait
Astronomer, lecturer and author debunks bad science and popular misconceptions.
Phil Plait is an astronomer, lecturer and author. After earning his doctorate in astronomy from the University of Virginia, Plait was a NASA contractor at the Goddard Space Flight Center, working ten years on the Hubble Space Telescope. He then began a career in public outreach and education with the “Bad Astronomy” website and blog, debunking bad science and popular misconceptions. He is a skeptic and fights the abuse of science, but his true love is praising the wonders of real science. Plait takes a scientifically-based but fun look at asteroid impacts, comet debris, and fears of world extinction as he talks about how these events have shaped our history, how they may do so again, and why Hollywood always seems to get them wrong. And lest you think it’s all doom and gloom, he goes into details on how we might prevent the next great impact from ruining our whole day. The title of his presentation is “Death From The Skies!”Note: Due to copyright restrictions associated with material he is presenting, there will not be a webcast of Phil Plait’s convocation.
