SUMMARY:Convocation: Richard Moss '77
DESCRIPTION:Richard Moss (Carleton Class of 1977) is Vice President and Managing Direct
or for Climate Change at the World Wildlife Fund. But his passion for the e
nvironment began long before he joined WWF. From turning his mother’s kit
chen into an environmental research lab as a teen to being a member of the
2007 Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) t
eam, Moss brings over 20 years of experience to WWF. He is at the forefront
of WWF’s efforts to develop conservation plans that account for our chan
ging climate and contribute to rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions
. He ensures that the best science and information is used in WWF’s plann
ing, and that solutions to climate change are a global priority. As a scien
ce-driven, global thinker, Moss is shaping WWF’s leadership role to focus
on adapting to climate changes we can no longer avoid and getting real red
uctions in emissions as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:Convocation: Ronald Heifetz
DESCRIPTION:Ronald Heifetz is one of the world's leading authorities on leadership. In
contemporary America, a traditionally respectful and idealistic view of peo
ple in positions of power is changing. High-profile scandals and abuses of
power have undermined the public’s perception of his leaders in both the
political and business worlds, realigning the very ideal of leadership. Wha
t sort of behavior makes for effective leadership in today’s world? The w
ork of Heifetz provides insight into this question. The founding director o
f the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard University’s John F. Kenned
y School of Government, Heifetz is renowned worldwide for his seminal work
on both the practice and teaching of leadership. Co-founder and principal o
f Cambridge Leadership Associates, Heifetz consults extensively in the Unit
ed States and abroad, with clients who include senior executives at major c
orporations, leaders of non-profits, and heads of nations. His widely accla
imed book, Leadership Without Easy Answers, is currently beyond its thirtee
nth printing and has been translated into many languages.

SUMMARY:Convocation: Luci Tapahonso
DESCRIPTION:Luci Tapahonso is an award-winning Navajo poet and short story author. Born
on the Navajo reservation in Shiprock, New Mexico, she grew up in a family
of 11 children. Navajo was her first language but she learned English befo
re starting school at the Navajo Methodist Mission in Farmington, New Mexic
 o. She majored in English at the University of New Mexico, as an undergradu
ate and a graduate student. She stayed on there as an Assistant Professor o
f English, Women's Studies and American Indian Studies for a few years. She
has been an Associate Professor of English at the University of Kansas and
is now Professor of English at the University of Arizona in Tucson where s
he teaches Poetry Writing and American Indian Literature. She is the author
of three children’s books and five books of poetry. She structures prose
and poetry that are mixtures of family stories, Navajo culture and legenda
ry tales. Utilizing many of the same storytelling techniques used by many N
ative American writers, she highlights aspects of her life that are importa
nt to her and has shaped the woman she is today. Unlike most Native America
n writers, however, Tapahonso’s writing is a translation from original wo
rk she has created in her tribe’s native tongue. Her work includes origin
al songs and chants designed for performance. For this reason, her English
work is strongly rhythmic and uses syntactical structures unusual in Englis
h language poetry. Her poetry and stories are moving and lyrical. The title
of her presentation is "A Radiant Curve: Stories and Poems."

SUMMARY:Convocation: Patrice Gaines
DESCRIPTION:Patrice Gaines is an award winning journalist and former Washington Post re
porter who has proven that you cannot judge a book by its cover. She grew u
p a self-hating young woman, entering one abusive relationship after anothe
 r. She became a heroin user, went to prison for possession of the drug and
was raped and beaten before she began her long contemplative journey to cha
nge. She later began her journalism career at the Miami News, and worked fo
r sixteen years as a reporter with the Washington Post, where she carved a
niche for herself focusing on human-interest stories that reflected current
issues. During this time she spent six years researching a notorious Washi
ngton, D.C. murder for which eight young men remain incarcerated. Her work
on the story raised serious doubts about the guilt of the youths and showed
readers the absolute power wielded by police and prosecutors. This story p
lus her own experience with the judicial and penal systems sparked her to b
egin speaking on the states of those systems today, including the high rate
of incarceration among minorities and the poor, questionable police practi
ces, prosecutors with too much power, and the weeding out of bad lawyers. S
he also offers an engaging look at the power of the press, told from an ins

DESCRIPTION:Joshua Aronson is Associate Professor of Applied Psychology at NYU’s Stei
nhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development. He has been stud
ying stereotypes, self-esteem, motivation, and attitudes for the past 13 ye
ars. His work seeks to understand and remediate race and gender gaps in edu
cational achievement and standardized test performance. Often, the low perf
ormance of blacks in particular, but other minorities as well, gets casuall
y chalked up to genetic or cultural differences that supposedly block acqui
sition of skills or values necessary for academic achievement. In sharp con
trast, Aronson has uncovered some exciting and encouraging answers to these
old questions by looking at the psychology of stigma - the way human being
s respond to negative stereotypes about their racial or gender group. What
he has found suggests that being targeted by well-known cultural stereotype
s ("blacks are unintelligent", "girls can't do math", and so on) can be ver
y threatening, a predicament that has been termed "Stereotype Threat."

cultures that America has to offer. To explore the lifestyle that each stat
