Summer Opportunities

 

  • All-USA College Academic Team

    Each March, USA Today honors twenty outstanding college juniors and seniors as its All-USA College Academic Team. They each receive a trophy and a $2,500 cash award. Students must be in their junior or senior year. February deadline.
  • Alder Creek Community Forest Internship

    The ENTS Summer Internship program also currently supports one student per summer to work at the Alder Creek Community Forest, an outdoor environmental education facility in southern Oregon.
  • American Chemical Society

    The scholarship is designed to encourage African-American, Hispanic, and Native American students to pursue undergraduate college degrees in the chemical sciences. March deadline; first years, sophomores, and juniors are eligible to apply.
  • Carleton Interdisciplinary Science & Math Initiative

    At Carleton, hiring for 50-60 summer student-faculty research positions in the sciences is carried out at the level of the department or individual faculty member.
  • Churchill Foundation Scholarship

    The Churchill Scholarship offers exceptional seniors the opportunity to study at Cambridge University in England. The tuition and fees of the university are covered as well an allowance for living expenses and travel. November on-campus deadline.
  • DAAD Scholarships

    The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers Deutschlandjahr Scholarships to outstanding bachelor's degree recipients for a year of independent study or a full Master's degree program at universities in the Federal Republic of Germany. Seniors are eligible to apply. November deadline.
  • Department of Energy

    The Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (CSGF)identifies and supports some of the very best computational science graduate students in the nation. This opportunity is available to seniors, and has a January deadline.
  • DHS HS-STEM Summer Internship Program

    The DHS HS-STEM Summer Internship Program provides a 10-week summer research experience for rising junior and seniors majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. January deadline.
  • Earhart Fellowship

    By remembering Amelia Earhart through this fellowship, Zonta International encourages and supports women to expand their horizons by pursuing aerospace-related science and aerospace engineering. Seniors are eligible to apply; applications are due in November.
  • EPA Star Fellowship

  • Evolving Earth

    This program provides grants to support college student research in the earth sciences. First years, sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible to apply. March deadline.
  • Ford

    The Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowship awards up to $20,000 per year for up to three years to individuals committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level and individuals enrolled in or planning to enroll in an eligible research-based program leading to a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree at a U.S. educational institution. This opportunity is open to seniors.
  • Fulbright Awards

    The Fulbright Student Program has been in existence since 1946 and offers students the opportunity to spend an academic year in a foreign country of choice. Seniors are eligible to apply and the completed application is due by 5 pm on the first day of classes.
  • Goldwater Scholarship

    The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation offers these scholarships to provide a continuing source of highly qualified individuals who demonstrate outstanding potential for academic study and research in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually. Sophomores and Juniors are eligible to apply.
  • Health Research Training Program

    The Health Research Training Program (HRTP) of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) offers the opportunity for undergraduate, graduate and professional school students to experience some of the "real life" challenges of public health. By working on current relevant public health issues under the close supervision and mentorship of experienced professionals, students apply classroom learning to practical problems in a closely matched practicum and, in the process, learn critical skills needed to excel in the field. First years, sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible to apply. February deadline.
  • Hertz Foundation Fellowship

    The Hertz Foundation's mission is to build America's capacity for innovation by nurturing remarkable applied scientists and engineers who show the most promise to change the world. Seniors are eligible to apply. Fall deadline.
  • The Robert J. Kolenkow and Robert A. Reitz Fund for Undergraduate Research

    David Ignat '63 has endowed a student scientific research program to provide support for students pursuing research projects during summer or winter breaks. Each year approximately twenty students (~9 per summer for full-time (10 weeks); ~14 per winter break) in the natural sciences and mathematics are supported during the winter and summer breaks. For winter break work funding for each student will not to exceed $1500. For summer break work funding for each student will not exceed $4200. The award funds the student's stipend and expenses for travel, lodging, and/or meals. First years, sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible to apply. The deadline is October 15 by 5 pm for winter break work and March 1 by 5 pm for summer break work.
  • Marshall Scholarship

    The Marshall Scholarship Program provides the opportunity for study in the U.K. to up to 40 intellectually distinguished young Americans. The Scholarship supports up to two years of graduate or undergraduate study in any discipline leading to a degree at a British university. The award covers tuition and fees, airfare, living expenses, and related expenses such as books. Seniors are eligible to apply. The internal deadline is mid September.
  • Mellon Mays Fellowship

    The primary goal of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) Program is to increase the number of minority students, and others with a demonstrated commitment to eradicating racial disparities, who will pursue PhDs in core fields in the arts and sciences by fostering the undergraduate experience of independent research, nurturing students as scholars, and deepening their awareness of graduate study and the professoriate. Sophomores and Juniors are eligible to apply. March deadline.
  • National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship

    The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship is a highly competitive, portable fellowship that is awarded to U.S. citizens and nationals who intend to pursue a doctoral degree in one of fifteen supported disciplines. NDSEG confers high honors upon its recipients, and allows them to attend whichever U.S. institution they choose. NDSEG Fellowships last for three years and pay for full tuition and all mandatory fees, a monthly stipend, and up to $1,000 a year in medical insurance. Seniors are eligible to apply. The deadline is mid December.
  • NNEMS

    The Environmental Protection Agency established the National Network for Environmental Management Studies in 1986 to foster a growing interest among higher education students in environmental careers. The NNEMS program is a comprehensive fellowship program that provides undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to participate in a fellowship project that is directly related to their field of study. First years, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors are eligible.
  • Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship

    The purpose of this program is to increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education and foster multidisciplinary training opportunities; increase public understanding and support for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere and improve environmental literacy; recruit and prepare students for public service careers with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other natural resource and science agencies at the federal, state and local levels of government; and recruit and prepare students for careers as teachers and educators in oceanic and atmospheric science and to improve scientific and environmental education in the United States.
  • National Science Foundation Fellowship

    The National Science Foundation (NSF) offers three-year graduate research fellowships in science, mathematics, and engineering, including Women in Engineering and Computer and Information Science awards. Seniors are eligible to apply. The first stage of the application process is due by mid-October.
  • Rhodes Scholarship

    The Cecil Rhodes Scholarships are intended to support outstanding scholars who show promise of contributing significantly to the world around them, particularly in the performance of public duties.The award supports two years (with a possibility of extension to a third year) full-time study towards a second Bachelor's degree or a higher-level degree at the University of Oxford, England. Seniors are eligible to apply.
  • Leonard M. Rieser Fellowship

    The family and friends of Leonard M. Rieser (1922-1998), chair of the Bulletin’s Board of Directors from 1985 to 1998, established the Leonard M. Rieser Fellowships in 1999 for undergraduate students seeking to conduct research on the connections between science, global security, and public policy. First years, sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible to apply. April deadline.
  • Rocky Mountain Institute Internship

    The ENTS Summer Internship program currently supports one student per summer to work at the Rocky Mountain Institute, an internationally-known and highly respected think-and-do tank located in Snowmass and Boulder, CO, and devoted to pursuing and implementing research-based solutions to our various energy and natural resource challenges.
  • SMART

    The Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART)Scholarship for Service Program is an opportunity for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering,and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines to receive a full scholarship and be employed upon degree completion at a Department of Defense research facility. First Year, Sophomore, Junior, Senior all eligible to apply.
  • Soros Fellowship

    The purpose of the Soros Fellowship is to provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. The Fellowships are granted for up to two years of graduate study in the United States. Seniors are eligible. November deadline.
  • Tylenol Scholarship

    The Tylenol Scholarship awards of up to $5,000 towards graduate school for future doctors, nurses and other health professionals.
  • Udall Scholarship

    The Morris K. Udall Scholarship and Excellence in National Environmental Policy Foundation awards approximately 75 scholarships annually to students pursuing careers related to environmental public policy, or who are Native Americans or Alaska Natives pursuing careers related to health care or tribal public policy. The program honors Representative Udall’s work to preserve the environment and public lands. Sophomores and Juniors are eligible to apply. January internal deadline.
  • Youth Activity Fund of the Explorers Club

    The Explorers Club offers grants to students conducting individual scientific or exploration research. First years, sophomores, and juniors are eligible to apply. December deadline.
  • Amgen Scholars Program

    The Amgen Scholars Program provides summer research opportunities in biotechnology and related science and engineering fields at 10 host universities in the US.
  • American Meterological Society Graduate Fellowship

    The AMS Graduate Fellowship Program awards students pursuing graduate study in the atmospheric, oceanic, or hydrologic sciences. Recipients will receive financial support for their first year of graduate study, as well as the opportunity to attend the AMS Annual Meeting.
