Advice for Juniors
Junior year is an important year for fellowships. You are eligible for many fellowships this year, and you need to start preparing for fellowships in your senior year.
If you are studying abroad this year or the summer after your junior year and have not yet investigated study-abroad fellowships, peruse the Off Campus Studies website.
Junior Year Fellowships
As a junior, you are eligible for the following fellowships:
- All-USA College Academic Team
- American Chemical Society Scholars Program and ACS Co-Sponsored Programs
- Amgen Scholars Summer Research Program
- Association for Women in Science Undergraduate Awards
- DHS HS-STEM Summer Internship Program
- Evolving Earth Student Grant Program
- Goldwater Scholarship
- Health Research Training Program
- Leonard M. Rieser Fellowship in Science, Technology, and Global Security
- Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship
- National Network for Environmental Management Studies (NNEMS)
- SMART Scholarship
- Udall Scholarship
- Youth Activity Fund of the Explorers Club
Preparation for Senior Year Fellowships
Several fellowships with deadlines in your senior year require preparation starting spring term your junior year.
- Churchill Scholarship: The deadline is October 22nd of your senior year. Contact Susan Singer, Lawrence McKinley Gould Professor of the Natural Sciences, for guidance and draft the application the summer after your junior year.
- Earhart Fellowship: The deadline is November 15th of your senior year. Contact Elizabeth Ciner, director of student fellowships for guidance and draft the application the summer after your junior year.
- Fulbright Awards:Early spring term of your junior year, there will be an open meeting to describe the Fulbright program to all students who may be interested in applying. At this meeting intent-to-apply forms will be distributed, but they can also be picked up at a later date in LDC 340. The completed form is due by May 24 in LDC 340. During the summer of your junior year, you should complete your application and contact should be made with a person in the host country who agrees to support your project. A letter from this person needs to be included in the application. Contact Roger Paas, William H. Laird Professor of German and the Liberal Arts for further information.
- Marshall Scholarship:The deadline is September 13th of your senior year. Contact Jessica Leiman, Department of English for guidance and draft the application the summer after your junior year.
- National Science Foundation Fellowship: The deadline is mid-October of your senior year. Contact Eric Egge, Department of Mathematics for guidance and draft the application the summer after your junior year.
- Rhodes Scholarship: The deadline is September 13th of your senior year. Contact Jessica Leiman, Department of English for guidance and draft the application the summer after your junior year.
Keep in mind that some fellowships with deadlines in your senior year require GRE scores.
