Erin Gudul '12, Economics MajorERIN VOICEOVER:
Hi, my name is Erin Gudul. I'm a senior economics major from North Oaks, Minnesota, and this is my Carleton.
When I was little, I would get dragged out to the tennis courts with my parents and my brother, and I was always the worst one.
I was introduced to Carleton mainly through my tennis coach from home. Being on the tennis team has really brought me together with a great group of girls—we have a lot of fun, but at the same time we really push each other.
For my comps project I'm getting an opportunity to combine my love for sports with my specified interest in behavioral economics. I'm focusing on loss aversion. People feel a much greater sensitivity to a loss than a gain of the same magnitude.
When I'm on the tennis court, I'm kind of thinking about my topic in the back of my mind, and I've talked to some of my teammates about it. We joke around sometimes on the court: 'Oh, this is what you're studying in your comps. Did you play more conservatively because you're in the face of gains?'
I studied abroad in Cambridge, England, on the Carleton economics seminar. A group of 25 of us spent the summer. You'd think spending three months together, people would get sick of each other...but we all had a wonderful time.
In addition to Cambridge I also spent a month in Peru. I worked with a women's weaving cooperative that has about 60 Quechua women. Through the cooperative, these women are able to earn these wages that they might not otherwise have, which allows them to send their kids to school and to bring a clean water supply to their community. Seeing the women do their incredible work was something that was amazing for me.
I'm a senior, this is my last few weeks at Carleton. I just want to thank you for your support and for your help. The generosity to give back is something that really makes Carleton the place it is—as unique, or quirky some might call it, but it really makes it truly a special place. So thank you.
