Members of Carleton’s Joseph Lee Heywood Society gathered during Reunion 2009. Heywood member Shannon Clark ’94 spoke about her grandmother’s influence in her decision both to attend Carleton and ultimately to include Carleton in her will. Seated at the kitchen table, Clark and her grandmother began to plan for the future, and “somewhere in these conversations, leaving a legacy for Carleton was introduced,” says Clark. “It fit perfectly.”
Their thoughtful planning will eventually provide scholarships to students with financial need. The Heywood Society, now with more than 1,500 members, is made up of those who have provided for Carleton in their estate plans or through deferred gifts.
