Goals for Benefits Program

October 9, 2009

Health Insurance Coverage

  • To prevent catastrophic financial consequences arising from medical expenses for enrolled Carleton employees and their families.
  • To balance the cost of health insurance between the College and the employee in a manner that encourages responsible utilization of benefits, while also providing a high level of care.
  • To offer health insurance coverage at a cost to the employee that reflects the College's overall financial situation and the best practices in our industry.
  • To create a benefit program that is as good or better than those at our peer institutions and, thereby, is attractive to prospective employees.

Retirement Benefits

  • To assist employees in funding adequate retirement accounts.

Wellness and Employee Environment

  • To recognize the benefits to the College of having a healthy work force.
  • To provide access to physical recreation and structured wellness programs.
  • To facilitate healthy choices such as smoking cessation, weight loss, etc. through College-based programs and through vendors such as the health insurance provider, EAP provider, and others, as appropriate.
  • To have tuition remission programs for Carleton faculty and staff that assist in recruiting and retaining employees.
  • To continue vacation benefits, leave options, and other similar programs at current levels.

New Benefits

  • To assess proposals for new benefits or enhancements that will meet identified needs for significant numbers of Carleton employees.
  • To analyze any future benefits in a way that considers financial constraints and addresses both outright costs, indirect costs, and potential benefits as part of the funding analysis.

Education Programs Regarding Current Benefits

  • To provide on-going employee information materials and group sessions relating to the suite of current benefits, EAP programs, special offerings, etc.
  • To have a regular presence in campus quarterly meetings, Carleton Weekly, etc., as a way of encouraging employees to learn more about the college's benefits offerings.
