Student comps projects and independent research projects conducted during the academic term, over winter break, or over the summer (including projects funded through Carleton research fellowships) are almost alwyas found to be Research projects by the IRB because the investigators intend to contribute to generalizable knowledge.

In these cases, the student researcher must submit a Formal Application to the IRB before beginning any research activities that involve human subjects.
