Academic Regulations & Procedures

Major Field Requirements

A major normally requires between 66 and 78 credits, including the senior integrative exercise and required courses and their prerequisites.

The requirements for majors are outlined in the Academic Catalog. Substitutions for the stated requirements may be made by judgment of the appropriate authority. For established majors, this authority resides with the department chair or program director. For special majors, this authority resides with the major advisers and the Academic Standing Committee (ASC), which approves special majors. In consultation with the Registrar’s Office and the Provost’s Office, the appropriate authority may allow some students who satisfied particular major requirements without credit-bearing activity to complete the major with a reduced number of credits; the major’s requirements for a particular student may not drop below 66 credits through this mechanism.

For any course to count toward the major, a grade of C- or better must be earned; these courses cannot be taken on an elective S/Cr/NC basis. Departments may make exceptions for extra-departmental courses if appropriate.
