Introducing Students to the Practice of the Humanities

One of the explicit aims of the Center is to involve students in the practice of humanistic research. Reading and editing scholarly work, formulating ideas, and establishing bibliographic materials all constitute important parts of that process. In some fields, research might also include interviewing, film editing, or archival work.

Student Research Assistantships provide an opportunity for students and faculty to work closely and collaboratively for their mutual benefit. Under the auspices of the Humanities Center, faculty members involve students in substantive areas of their research during the winter or summer breaks. Student Research Assistants (SRAs) gain valuable experience that enhances their academic experience at Carleton and prepares them for graduate school and beyond.

TO APPLY

STUDENTS seeking an assistantship are invited to speak with professors in their field about their interest in being an SRA during an upcoming break.

FACULTY should identify and invite a qualified student who would benefit from the Assistantship and who is available during the specified period. Faculty may wish to interview several potential applicants to ascertain the students' interest and previous experience in the project before submitting an application.

GRANT: A stipend of up to 60 hours of student work during winter break, and up to 180 hours during the summer.

APPLICATION: When a match between student and faculty member has been made, the faculty member may submit an application to the Humanities Center. Please complete the application form by the appropriate deadline.

DEADLINES: WINTER SRAs:  Friday, 26 October 2012, 5:00 p.m.
                   SUMMER SRAs: Monday, 18 March, 2013, 5:00 p.m.

PRIORITY will be given to rising juniors and seniors, though sophomores are also eligible. Seniors are not eligible to participate after graduation.
