Mobile devices are changing how we work, learn, and play. Who's using them at Carleton and for what purposes? Join the InfoServices Forum next Wednesday, May 28, for a roundup of mobile devices and applications, demonstrated and reviewed by faculty and staff who use them.
Presenters:
- Anne Ulmer, Professor of German – While open to the “right” convergence device, Anne remains enthralled by her Palm TX. She will discuss her use of software including UltraLingua and CryptInfo, and ask whether the benefits of mobile devices outweigh the headaches.
- Eric Hinsdale, Library Technology Coordinator – Because Palm devices don't always play well with Zimbra, the Library staff have been evaluating other devices, including non-cellular ones. Eric will talk about their evaluation and how the Library hopes to use mobile technology in the future.
- Nathan White, Web Application Developer – Nate was issued a Palm upon arrival at Carleton. Nowadays, however, he leaves both Palm and laptop at home, and relies upon his iPhone. Nate plans to demonstrate Evernote, a mobile-focused service that facilitates the capture and retrieval of notes, and explore whether or not the laptop is the mobile device of the future.
- Richard Goerwitz, Database Administrator/Application Developer – Richard will discuss how new cell phones with embedded GPSs can geocode photos, enabling photo services like Picasa to auto-place them on a map.
- Richard Graves, Senior Unix & Security Administrator – Rich will summarize the options for connecting to Zimbra from mobile devices and talk about technical concerns and security issues with mobile devices.
