How can I type IPA characters on my computer? (IPA=International Phonetic Alphabet)

Both Windows and Macintosh are fully Unicode capable, and therefore can type IPA characters. The key is to have these three things:

  1. An input method for the IPA characters (a "keyboard")
  2. A program that supports Unicode (such as Word)
  3. A font that contains the appropriate IPA characters

None of these are hard to obtain for Windows XP and Macintosh OS X. I'll be working on more detailed instructions on how to do this. Please check back soon.
