Installing CAN8
CAN8 is available for students and faculty to install on your personally owned computers. Please read the install instructions carefully before attempting to install the software.
You must be enrolled into a language course at Carleton College in order to use this software. Though it is offered for you to download, only your CAN8 account will give you access to our server. Accounts are refreshed at the beginning of every term, your language instructor will give you information about how to access CAN8 as it is necessary.
Installation Requirements:
- Windows 98, 2000, XP or Vista
- high-speed internet connection
- Full-duplex sound card (what's that?)
- quality headset with microphone (available at the Carleton bookstore)

What if I have a Mac?
Unfortunately, CAN8 is not made for the Mac.
If you have a PowerPC Macintosh, Virutal PC will allow you to run CAN8, albeit very slowly. You will not be able to record into CAN8 through Virtual PC, but you will be able to listen to lessons. Virtual PC is available from Microsoft.
If you have a new Intel-based Mac, you can get a copy of Windows and either dual-boot or use Parallels software to virtualize Windows under Mac OS. Previous issues with recording audio into CAN8 on Parallels seem to have been resolved with recent versions.
Dual-booting into Windows on your Intel-Mac will allow flawless recording into CAN8. The only downside is that you cannot multitask between your Mac and Windows environments, you have to shut down one to boot the other.
For more information about dual-booting your Intel Mac into Windows, see Apple's Bootcamp site.
In both cases, you must purchase a legal copy of Windows from Microsoft.
What is a full-duplex sound card?
A full-duplex sound card is a sound card that allows audio to travel both directions at the same time. That is, it allows you to record audio into the computer and listen to audio coming out of the computer at the same time.
Most standard desktop computers have full-duplex sound cards built into them. Lesser models of laptops will frequently not have full-duplex sound cards, so you will notice audio that is playing cutting out any time you record into it. This does not necessary prevent you from using CAN8 on your computer, but you may find certain kinds of activities difficult without the proper soundcard.
How do I remove things from my Startup Folder?
Each account on Windows will have it's own startup folder that you can use. If you put a file or shortcut to a program in the Startup Folder, it will automatically launch when you log in. If you'd like to remove the mapO.bat from your Startup folder, follow these steps:
- Double-click to open the following location: My Computer > Local Disk (C:) > Documents and Settings
- You will see a folder for each account on your Windows machine here, double-click the one you use to login to your computer
- Double-click Programs > Startup
- Remove anything you don't want or add shortcuts to things you do want
