Tom Rassieur, the John E. Andrus III Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, will present an art history lecture entitled “Rembrandt’s Interest in Books on Art” on Tuesday, April 9 at 5 p.m. in Boliou Hall, Room 104.
Rassieur notes, “Rembrandt was opinionated, but he wrote very little about art.” Rassieur will investigate the possibility of uncovering Rembrandt’s attitudes through comparison of themes, practices, and transitions in his art to the stories, theories, and instructions found in contemporary books on art.
In 2012, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts was one of a few select national institutions to display “Rembrandt in America,” an exhibition featuring the largest group of authentic Rembrandt paintings ever brought together in America.
Rassieur is the author of numerous books and articles on Rembrandt, including “Rembrandt in America: Collecting and Connoisseurship” (Cleveland Museum of Art, 2011). He is the recipient of a BA from Princeton University and an MA from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University.
