Acclaimed pianist Nicola Melville to perform in concert

January 12, 2015

Acclaimed composer and pianist Nicola Melville will perform Sunday, Jan. 18 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Carleton College Concert Hall. Melville’s performance will include an eclectic mix of old and new compositions: Schubert’s German Dances, Chopin’s Mazurkas, and Debussy’s Estampes will rub shoulders with ragtime pieces by William Albright and Jacob TV’s humorous Body of Your Dreams for piano and boombox. A special feature will be the world premiere of three new miniatures by New Zealand composers Gareth Farr, Eve de Castro-Robinson, and Ross Harris.

Associate professor of music Nicola Melville received the B.M. from the Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand), and the M.M., D.M.A., and the Performers Certificate from the Eastman School of Music. Melville has commissioned and premiered many works by composers in the United States and her native New Zealand. She has recorded the complete piano rags of William Albright for the Equilibrium label; her most recent CD, released on Innova Recordings, features thirteen new commissions by award-winning composers from around the US. In addition to being an advocate for new music, her ongoing interests include interdisciplinary performances that combine music with other artistic genres in live performance.

This event is sponsored by the Carleton College Department of Music. For more information, including disability accommodations, call (507) 222-4475. The Concert Hall is located on First Street between Nevada and Winona Streets in Northfield.
