On Friday, May 13 beginning at noon, Carleton will host its seventh annual Empty Bowls Project fundraiser at noon on the College’s Bald Spot. The event will feature homemade soup served in handmade ceramic bowls created by Carleton art students. For a suggested minimum donation of  $15 per bowl, participants will be able to enjoy a variety of homemade soups and keep their handmade bowl. All proceeds from this event will go to the Northfield Community Action Center Food Shelf.  This popular annual event is free and open to the public.

Empty Bowls is an international nonprofit project that gives away food in bowls made by local artists in return for donations to benefit the hungry. The Empty Bowls Project was initiated 1990 by a rural Michigan art teacher and his students. The simple concept spread across the country and the world, and now art teachers and students hold Empty Bowls Project fundraisers of various sizes annually from the elementary to the college level. The empty bowls serve as a reminder of the empty bowls in our community and all over the world.

Empty Bowls’ success relies on student effort, to make the bowls, and community effort, to make it count. Carleton art professor Kelly Connole’s ceramics students have worked hard to create a variety of bowls for the fundraiser, treating the event as a collaborative civic engagement project. In addition, residents of various interest houses on campus will cook up pots of homemade soup.

This event is sponsored by the Carleton College Department of Art and Art History. The Carleton College Bald Spot is located behind the Skinner Memorial Chapel on First Street. In case of rain, the event will be moved to the Evans Dining Hall, which is located on the first floor of Evans Hall, off First and Maple Streets on the Carleton campus.
