Carleton College continues its inaugural Tournées French Film Festival with a public screening of François Ozon’s hilarious comedy, “Potiche,” on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity Cinema. The film will be shown in French with English subtitles and Carleton College faculty members will provide a brief introduction prior to the screening. This event is free and open to the public.
“Potiche” (2010, Rated-R), set in 1977 in a provincial French town, is a free adaptation of the 1970s hit comic play of the same name. Catherine Deneuve stars as Suzanne Pujol, a housebound “trophy wife” (or “potiche”), who steps in to manage the umbrella factory run by her husband (Fabrice Luchini) after the workers go on strike. To everyone’s surprise, Suzanne proves herself a competent and assertive woman of action. Gérard Depardieu plays a former union leader and Suzanne’s ex-beau who still holds a flame for her. Acclaimed writer-director Ozon (“Swimming Pool,” “Under the Sand”), who previously directed Ms. Deneuve in the international hit “8 Women,” twists the original play on its head to create his own satirical and hilarious take on the war between the sexes and classes. The Tournées Festival at Carleton College offers a wide variety of films that represent the best of contemporary French cinema. This year’s festival concludes with “Un Secret (A Secret)” (2007, directed by Claude Miller) on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity Cinema.
