Jeff Lieberman, the star of the Discovery Channel’s Time Warp, will deliver Carleton College’s weekly convocation address on Friday, Oct. 28 at 10:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. In his presentation, entitled “Asking Why? The Nature of Curiosity,” Lieberman will present a fantastical view of the merging of art and science as he helps the audience perceive the world in a whole new way. This event is free and open to the public.

On Time Warp, accessible science is s-l-o-w-e-d down in order to enable viewers to discover and understand movement as an art form. With the aid of the newest high-speed photography, Time Warp watches such simple and diverse high-speed movements as a cork exploding from a champagne bottle or an apple being hit with a bullet to appreciate the physics – and natural beauty – in these normally impossibly-fast moments for the first time. Using technology to see beyond what is visible with ordinary human perception, Lieberman explores connections between the arts and sciences to examine the outer limits of creativity and human consciousness.

In addition to starring on his own TV show, Lieberman is a roboticist, sculptor, musician, and photographer, and his show, Time Warp, combines all these disparate interests. He holds four degrees from the Massachusetts Institution of Technology (MIT) – in physics, math, mechanical engineering, and media arts and sciences – exhibits his technological sculptures around the world, and is a member of the musical duo, Gloobic. He maintains a blog at www.bea.st.

The event is sponsored by the Carleton College Office of College Relations. For more information or disability accommodations, contact kraadt@carleton.edu. The Skinner Memorial Chapel is located on First Street, between the corners of College and Winona Streets, in Northfield.
