Carleton College’s Annual Craft Fair and Bake Sale Returns in New Location

November 21, 2011

Carleton College’s annual holiday Craft and Custodial Bake Sale will take place on Friday, December 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Commons of the Weitz Center for Creativity. A wide variety of hand-crafted items and baked goods will be available for purchase, ranging from jewelry, afghans, baskets, outerwear, candles, and much more. Vendors will donate a portion of the proceeds from their sales to the Carleton College Custodial Scholarship Fund. This popular annual event is free and open to the public.

Long-time Carleton employee Loretta Springer first organized this event in 1982, as a way to showcase and sell homemade items made by Carleton staff. Today, around 30 vendors participate each year, from Carleton as well as the greater Northfield community, offering a wide range of apparel, crafts, accessories, and more. The fundraiser also continues to serve as a fun way to demonstrate the wide-range of hobbies and crafts engaged in by Carleton staff and community members.

Carleton custodian Pat Flynn established the Custodial Scholarship Fund in 1993. Over three-quarters of the custodial staff at Carleton donate back a portion of each paycheck to help fund an endowed scholarship given each year to at least one Carleton student. In 1997, Flynn organized the first annual bake sale in partnership with the craft sale to help raise money for the Scholarship Fund; the bake sale raised close to $600 in 2010.

The Weitz Center for Creativity is located at 320 East Third Streeet in Northfield. For more information on the event, or if interested in participating as a vendor at the sale, please contact Loretta Springer at (507) 222-4186 or Patti Sabrowski at (507) 222-4739.  The cost for members of the Carleton community is $10, and $20 for non-Carleton participants; fees will be donated to the Custodial Scholarship Fund.
