Dr. Jane Nofer Poskanzer, of  the Fraser Child & Family Center, will present “Autism Spectrum Disorders: What Should A Liberally Educated Person Know?” on Thursday, Feb. 2 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Carleton College Gould Library Athenaeum. This event is free and open to the public.

Nofer Poskanzer’s talk will focus on defining the facts that an educated person should know about autism spectrum disorders. Rather than addressing the technical and scientific questions related to these disorders, her presentation will focus on the ways in which society thinks about differently functioning individuals, with special attention to the ways in which science is communicated to the public.

Nofer Poskanzer is a clinical psychologist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of people with autism spectrum disorders. She has worked in diagnostic clinics serving autistic people at several university hospitals, including the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the University of Chicago Hospitals, and the Albany Medical Center. Her experience also includes teaching and providing consultation to students with autism spectrum disorders, as well as working with public efforts to provide information and support to help families and professionals support young people on the autism spectrum.

This event is sponsored by Ethical Inquiry at Carleton (EthIC), a program that seeks to support and encourage discussions of ethical issues within Carleton and throughout the wider community through both curricular and extracurricular activities. EthIC’s mission is to increase opportunities for the discussion of values and contribute to the development of meaningful and ethical life philosophies.
