Carleton College will present a faculty recital featuring Thomas Rosenberg (cello) and Nicola Melville (piano) on Sunday, February 12 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall. Featuring masterpieces from three centuries of music for cello and keyboard, including sonatas by Johannes Brahms and Samuel Barber, this concert is free and open to the public.
Lecturer in cello Thomas Rosenberg received the BM from Oberlin College and the MM from the Eastman School of Music. He is also a faculty member at the University of Minnesota and Macalester College and at Carleton, where in addition to teaching he performs with The Veblen Trio. Recipient of the 2003-4 “Master Studio Teacher Award” from the Minnesota chapter of the American String Teachers Asssociation and the 2004-5 McKnight Performing Artist Fellowship Award, he frequently performs with area ensembles including the Minnesota Orchestra and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. He has received chamber music prizes at the Munich, Portsmouth (England), and Chicago Discovery Competitions, and is a founding member of the highly acclaimed Chester String Quartet with whom he toured internationally and recorded.
Associate professor music Nicola Melville received the BM from the Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand) and the MM, DMA, and the Performers Certificate from the Eastman School of Music. Melville has commissioned and premiered many works by composers in the United States and her native New Zealand. She has recorded the complete piano rags of William Albright for the Equilibrium label; her most recent CD, released on Innova Recordings, features thirteen new commissions by award-winning composers from around the U.S.
