The show will go on at Carleton College -- the Carleton Film Society, a student-run organization that promotes arthhouse film, will continue its weekly public screenings on Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity Cinema. Each film is preceded by an introduction from a Carleton professor or other guest speaker, and student-led discussion follow the screenings. Screening are free and open to the public.

The next film in the series will be “Fela Kuti—Music is the Weapon” (France, 1982), a look at the work of Fela Kuti, a Nigerian musician and human rights activist who pioneered the Afrobeat genre while fighting on behalf of his people. The series will also include a screening of “Men with Arms,” a new Carleton-made feature by 2011 Carleton alumnus Gabe Loeb and current Carleton students Joey Fishman ’13 (Chicago) and Matt Spevack ’13 (New York), both of whom are cinema and media studies majors.

The series is an example of the many public opportunities taking place in the Weitz Center for Creativity. Despite its population of around 20,000, Northfield had no public movie theater until the opening of the facility, and the new cinema has become a site for community engagement with film as well as being the center for cinema and media studies at Carleton College.

The Film Society has worked to incorporate the greater Northfield community into its series. According to the society’s president, Josiah Burns ’13 (Ivoryton, Conn.), student members of the society vote on what films to feature, but the group also welcomes input from community members who attend screenings. Burns describes this as “a good way of finding local responses to the films.” While the society has existed for decades, it has never been able to screen films publicly until the opening of the new cinema, Burns notes.
