Weitz Center Exhibit Highlights Multi-Media Artist John Peña's "Daily Geology"

January 14, 2013

The work of Pittsburgh-based, multi-media artist John Peña's "Daily Geology" is featured in an exhibit in the Kaemmer Family Gallery of Perlman Teaching Museum, located in the Weitz Center for Creativity. Peña's two-year autobiographical project "Daily Geology" depicts one drawing a day to highlight a memorable if unremarkable moment or experience. Aiming to dramatize links between humans and nature, Peña defines his life as a slow accretion of experience; he offers small pencil drawings full of family dynamics, random encounters, personal hungers, and longings, to gradually tell the big story of a life.

Peña will appear at Carleton on Thursday, January 17 at 4:30 p.m. in the Weitz Center Cinema, presenting a lecture entitled, "Silly Doodles Filled with Sorrow and Joy," followed by a 5:30 p.m. reception at the Perlman Teaching Museum.

Peña received his M.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University in 2008 then later traveled Colombia on a Fulbright Fellowship. He has attended The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, The Fine Arts Work Center and The Bemis Center for Contemporary Art. He has also exhibited artworks at The Mattress Factory Museum in Pittsburgh, Kevin Kavanaugh Gallery in Dublin, Kate Werble Gallery in NYC, and The Bumbershoot Arts Festival in Seattle, WA.

"Daily Geology" is on display through March 13, 2013. The Perlman Teaching Museum is located in the Weitz Center for Creativity at Third and College Streets. Hours are: Monday–Wednesday: 11:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.; Thursday–Friday: 11:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m.; Saturday: noon–4:00 p.m.; and Sunday: closed.
