Michelle Holzapfel: Chrysalis

September 9, 2011

Michelle Holzapfel: Chrysalis

Turned wooden bowls are wonderful arenas for creativity, and for celebrating the natural beauty of wood. The artist, Michelle Holzapfel, is a Carleton parent. Her work bursts out of the category of turned wooden bowls—she's clearly more of a sculptor than a functional artist. This extraordinary bowl is an example of how the artist transforms a piece of wood into a metaphor for the organic process.

Visit the artist's website.

See a YouTube video of Michelle Holzapfel demonstrating her techniques.

Ruth Harkison Waterbury '57 and David Waterbury gave this piece to Carleton in appreciation of former president Stephen R. Lewis Jr. for his leadership on behalf of the College's gay and lesbian students.
