[El Hadj Hamidou Maïga]Hamidou Maïga, born in Burkina Faso to a family of masons, as a young man was an itinerant mason, musician and acrobat. Initially he employed a photographer for publicity purposes, but then adopted the profession himself. By 1960 he was working as a professional photographer in Timbuktu, Mali, shooting outdoors against a textile backdrop, or in the homes of clients. In 1973, Maïga opened the first of four studios in Bamako. In 2003, the photographer made the pilgrimage to Mecca, earning him the title El Hadj.
