Following 7 inches of rain over a 24-hour period, the Cannon River rose to record levels, flooding the western edge of the Carleton College campus. This video reflects the extent of the flooding at Laird Stadium, West Gym, and the practice fields adjacent to West Gym. Carleton students joined in the sandbagging efforts to protect downtown Northfield businesses.

On Friday, June 4, more than 500 Carleton students converged on the Bald Spot in an attempt to break the world record for the largest group "spoon." Student photographer Nate Ryan '10 captured numerous images from the Skinner Memorial Chapel's tower and turned those images into a time lapse slide show and set it to music.

A video recapping Bassekou Kouyate and his band, Ngoni Ba, and their Mali musical performance at Carleton's Great Hall on Tuesday, April 13. Ngoni Ba features four family members playing the ngoni, a West African instrument that was the forerunner of the American banjo. Ngoni Ba is currently wrapping up a tour of North America in the wake of the release of the group's second album, “I Speak Fula” (Sub Pop, 2010). The event was sponsored by Carleton's Humanities Center, African and African American Studies, the Committee for the Study of the Arts, and Special Projects.

Watch a performance and interview with music major Kimloan Nguyen '08 (Burnsville, Minn.), who won second prize in the Instrumental Solo division of the American Regional Competition of the 2007 CCTV (Chinese Central Television) Folk Instrument TV Competition. The competition took place October 7 in Santa Clara, Calif. Nguyen, who plays the Chineses pipa, performed a composition entitled "Flying Dragon" by Gao Hong Dice, performance activities coordinator in music and adjunct instructor in Chinese musical instruments. Nguyen is now eligible for the semi-finals of the 2007 CCTV Folk Instrument TV Competition, which will be held in Beijing. The competition is the equivalent of "American Idol" in China; the annual competition is viewed on Chinese television by millions in China and around the world. Toff, Carleton’s beloved campus cat, celebrated his 10th birthday on April 2, 2007 with a campus-wide birthday bash. Toff spent much of the day hanging out in the Sayles Hill Great Space, where well-wishers stopped by to wish him a happy birthday. He was also available for group photos and free career advice. The Carleton bookstore featured “Toff’s List,” a selection of books about cats, and also sold special limited-edition postcards of Toff reclining on a couch next to the bust of Schiller. Toff was the subject of this short film by Andrew Bartels ’04 and Karina Hill ’06, who followed Carleton’s favorite feline around campus and documented some of his exploits.

Along with his award-winning documentary 'Born Again', his new book 'Spirit and Flesh: Life in a Fundamentalist Baptist Church' was named one of the five best nonfiction books of 2004 by the Christian Science Monitor. The title of his talk is, 'Understanding Christian Fundamentalism and Social Conservatism in American Life.'
