Carleton Shines With Hindu Festival of Lights

On Sunday, October 18, Carleton commemorated the Hindu “festival of lights,” Diwali, with a celebratory event held at the Severance Great Hall. The event featured a keynote address by guest speaker Suhag Shukla, co-founder of the Hindu American Foundation, followed by vocal and dance performances by members of DESI (Dedicated to the Exploration of South-Asian Interests) club and other Carleton students.

Three days after announcing his retirement to the Carleton community, President Robert A. Oden Jr. spoke to Carleton faculty, staff and students in the Sayles-Hill Campus Center on Sept. 28, 2009. Oden reflected on his time at Carleton and what lies ahead for him in his final nine months. Carleton Board of Trustees chair Jack Eugster '67 also addressed the crowd. “Engagement Wanted” Opens Doors for Graduating Carls

It’s a tough year to be a recent college graduate. The poor economy means fewer companies are interested in hiring, nonprofits have less funding, and paid internships are few and far between. Offices all across the Carleton campus, reports Brent Nystrom ‘92, associate director of the College’s Career Center and manager of mentor relations, knew “we’ve got to do everything we can to help seniors, especially this year.” So, staff from the Career Center got right to work. “We asked ourselves,” says Nystrom, “What can we do in a really short time?”
