Time Warner CEO named Carleton Vincent Fellow
As chairman and chief executive officer of Time Warner Inc., Gerald M. Levin leads the world's foremost media and entertainment company. On April 23 and 24, he will visit Carleton College to share his expertise with students as the College's 1998 Alice Lynch Vincent Fellow. During his stay on campus, Levin will present Carleton's weekly convocation, host small group discussions, visit classes and lead students in an analysis of Time Warner business practices.

KRLX Turns 50
Fifty years ago, Carleton College's radio station began with the help of 157 student volunteers, $1,000 in student donations, $800 in loans from the College-and a couple of shovels.

Carleton Psychology Students Study Mental Retardation
Peter Prenzel-Guthrie, emeritus professor of psychology at Carleton College, has been challenging his students since 1971 by turning institutions like Northfield's Laura Baker School into a Carleton classroom two times a week. As part of his introductory course titled "Practicum in Mental Retardation," Prenzel-Guthrie's students met individually with clients (residents) at the school to study behavior modification and to determine whether all minds go through the same stages of development.

Carleton Students Perform in Courtroom
Recent trials like the O.J. Simpson case and the Oklahoma City bombing trial have intensely publicized the American justice system. Eight Carleton College students recently participated in Mock Trial, an experience which allowed them to encounter the trial process first-hand. Twenty-eight college teams from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan competed at this year's regional competition at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.

ANTARCTIC RESEARCH VESSEL NAMED AFTER LAURENCE M. GOULD
Laurence McKinley Gould, the well-loved Antarctic explorer, professor and former Carleton president, already has a lengthy list of namesakes including Antarctic mountains, bays, glaciers, coasts and the Carleton library. At a dedication ceremony on October 9, the world received one more -- a 230-foot research vessel/ice breaker.

Carleton Academic Quiz Team Dominates Tournament
The Carleton College Academic Quiz Team won the team title and two individual honors at an academic quiz tournament in Kansas City, on September 27. Carleton won the tournament by besting a sixteen-team field including representatives of Iowa State University, Washington University (St. Louis),Wichita State University and the Universities of Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.

Former Carleton President to Give Opening Convocation
David H. Porter returns to Carleton College to deliver Opening Convocation in Skinner Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, September 10 at 3 p.m. Porter taught classics and music at Carleton for 25 years and was the William H. Laird Professor of Liberal Arts from 1974-1987. He served as Carleton President from 1986-1987 before moving on to become President of
Skidmore College in July 1987.
