Carleton Releases Obama Convocation Audio from 1999

November 19, 2008

Northfield, Minn.--Carleton College has released the audio from president-elect Barack Obama’s convocation address on Feb. 5, 1999.

Obama, then a civil rights attorney, author, lecturer, and community development specialist, was the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review, and an Illinois state senator at the time of his address. He was the convocation speaker for Black History Month at Carleton’s Skinner Memorial Chapel.

To listen to the audio, which is edited into six different segments, visit the Audio/Video archives page of the Carleton News site. An image from the Carletonian's account of Obama's speech is also available.

Remember, all recent convocations are archived, along with notable addresses from speakers such as President Bill Clinton, former secretary of energy and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Bill Richardson, George Will, and Jesse Ventura.
