Pamela Feldman-Savelsberg (anthropology) presents on memory and rumor
Pamela Feldman-Savelsberg, associate professor of anthropology, presented a talk titled "Reproductive Insecurity and the Management of Memory in Cameroon" at Brown University. She also presented a paper titled "How Rumor Begets Rumor: Collective Memory, Ethnic Conflict, and Reproductive Rumors in Cameroon," at the Social Consequences of Rumor and Legend conference in Bellagio, Italy.

Kathleen Ryor (art history) awarded Getty Fellowship
Kathleen Ryor, associate professor of art history, has been awarded a Getty Postdoctoral Fellowship for her book project titled "Sensual Pleasures and Bodily Disciplines: Xu Wei and Late Ming Corporeality." Ryor also delivered one of the Hsiang Lectures on Chinese Poetry at McGill University.

Kimberly Baker (biology) published in JBC
Kimberly Baker, visiting assistant professor of biology, had an article titled "Ets-2 and Components of Mammalian SWI/SNF Form a Repressor Complex that Negatively Regulates the BRCA1 Promoter" published online in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. The article will be published in print in June.

Shahzad Bashir, assistant professor of religion, presented a paper titled "The Devil, Women, and Oneness of Being: Sufi Masters in Nineteenth-Century Southern Punjab" at the recent conference on Sufism and Social Transformation in the Punjab at Amherst College.

Eleanor Zelliot (history) presents on Asia
Eleanor Zelliot, the Laird Bell Professor Emerita of History, chaired a panel of young scholars on "History and Identity: A Discussion of Dalait Perspectives" at the annual meeting of the Association for Asian Studies. She gave a paper titled "Using the Voices of India's Untouchables" for the panel on "Fresh Material: Teaching about Asia with New Research and Technology" at the AsiaNetwork conference.

Eric Hillemann (archivist) wins Carper Lifetime Achievement Award.
Eric Hillemann, college archivist, has been named the winner of the Dr. N. Gordon Carper Lifetime Achievement Award for 2003. The Carper Award was established by the Academic Competition Federation (ACF) in 1999 to honor individuals "for meritorious services in sustaining and enriching collegiate academic competitions." The Carper Award is the most prestigious honor available within the quizbowl world and Hillemann is the fourth recipient.

Roger Lasley (registrar) presents at AACRAO
Roger Lasley, registrar, presented a session on "Campus Compliance Review" and co-presented a session on "Shared Campus Agreements" at the annual meeting of the American Association of College Registrars and Admission Officers (AACRAO) in Washington, D.C. In his role as Chair of the AACRAO Small College Issues Committee, Lasley also led a roundtable discussion.

John Ramsay (educational studies) essay appears in Education Week.
John Ramsay, the Hollis L. Caswell Professor of Educational Studies, published an essay titled "Savor the Slump" in Education Week. The commentary highlights the contributions of Vivian Paley, a 1989 MacArthur Foundation "genius" fellowship recipient and her contributions to the field of education.

Shahzad Bashir (religion) and Adeeb Khalid (history) speak at Macalester teach-in.
Shahzad Bashir, assistant professor of religion, and Adeeb Khalid, associate professor of history, were presenters at "Iraq: Anatomy of a Crisis: Causes and Implications of the War," a Macalester College teach-in. Bashir and Khalid presented on "History, politics and religion: How much is this war really about the Middle East?"

Valerie Weiss '92 named outstanding senior at VMRCVM
Valerie Weiss '92 is the recipient of the 2002-2003 Outstanding Senior Award for the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (VMRCVM). Weiss received her B.A. from Carleton and her M.A. from the College of William and Mary. Weiss' research experience includes a study of field ecology and conservation of brown-headed nuthatches and aviary study of effects of color brands on nuthatch behavior. Weiss has received numerous grants and awards at VMCVM including the Dr. J.D. Carter Award and the Pamela M. Slack Memorial Award. She will graduate from VMCVM in May 2003. Weiss majored in biology at Carleton.
