Explanation for Spring Elections

Want to run for CSA Senate?
Read this first!

The goal of the CSA Senate is to “improve the life of Carleton Students by providing the organization necessary to express student opinions and ideas, and to take action to attain our goals. We believe that as students we have certain rights, and have concomitant responsibilities to ourselves, the academic community, and society. It shall be the purpose of the CSA to work to uphold these rights and responsibilities.”

Available seats (ask any current member of Senate if you are unsure what a position entails, or check out the bylaws here):

  • 2 College Council Liaisons/Senators
  • 1 St. Olaf Intercampus Liaison/Senator
  • 1 Admission and Financial Aid Liaison/Senator
  • 1 Environmental Advisory Committee Liaison/Senator
  • 1 Educational Curriculum Committee Liaison/Senator
  • 2 student at-large positions on the College Council
  • 5 Senators-at-Large: Fall 2007-Spring 2008

Election rules:

  • You may run for only one position.
  • CSA chartered organizations may endorse candidates, but may not spend money on their behalf.
  • No candidate may spend more than $25.00 on their campaign.
  • Candidates may not knowingly destroy other candidates’ property.
  • Candidates must be current members of the CSA.
  • A candidate may have a maximum of 30 posters, with a maximum of 4 per building, up at any one time during the campaign

To run for any of these seats, click and download an election petition at right. To be eligible for any of the above mentioned Senate seats or liaison seats, the petition must be signed by 15 students including at least 3 from each class. To be eligible for the College Council liaison seats, however, the petition must be signed by 25 students, including at least 5 from each class. Also required is a platform – describe, in one page or less, your qualifications, experience, and plans if elected to this seat. This information will be made publicly available. The platform should be in Microsoft Word format, and e-mailed to President Caitlin Fleming (flemingc). When posted online, formatting options are limited. Fonts and spacing will be standardized, and no images will be included.

Petitions and platforms are due Sunday, May 11th, 2008 Petitions should be delivered to President Fleming's mailbox, and platforms should be sent via e-mail (flemingc).

Candidate debates are tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, May 14, 7pm. Voting is scheduled to take place online May 14th- 18th. Election results will be available within hours of the conclusion of voting.
