Welcome to Angela Curran's Web Page
I am an assistant professor at Carleton College. My primary areas of research are ancient Greek philosophy, especially Aristotle, philosophy of film, and aesthetics. At Carleton I teach courses in these areas and on the topic of personal identity. A major theme of my research is the extent to which Aristotle's thought can provide a useful framework for thinking about contemporary philosophical issues. My current research focuses on two different aspects of Aristotle's thought. First, I am working on understanding how Aristotle’s view of a basic human nature or essence can provide a standard for human flourishing in a contemporary political context. Second, I am developing an Aristotelian account of the role that the emotions play in our learning from dramatic and narrative art forms such as narrative film. My recent publications include a co-edited anthology with Tom Wartenberg: Philosophy of Film: Introductory Text and Readings (Blackwell).
