Philosophy of Film

Fall 2006

Course Description:
What is the nature of film? Is it the representation of reality or artistic expression? Does a film have an author? Do all films have narrators? What is the relationship between film and philosophy? Can Hollywood films provide philosophical illumination? Can films make philosophical arguments? We examine these questions through readings from philosophers, film theorists, movie critics, and required weekly screenings of films.

Note: if you are enrolled as a student in this class, please go to the course page on Moodle, the Carleton course management system, for updated information.
