MISCELLANEOUS PRESENTATIONS AND APPEARANCES
In May, 1948, I created the role of Brother Anastasius, a monk, in the world premiere of Bertholt Brecht's The Caucasian Chalk Circle in Nourse Little Theater at Carleton College. I participated in the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of that production in May, 1998, at Carleton.
I have given a great many talks on various subjects over the years to Rotary Clubs in England and the United States; to the Margaret Evans Huntington Club of Northfield; to classes at Northfield High School; at Shattuck School, Fairbault MN; in Montgomery MN; at a Guthrie Theater Post-Performance Symposium on A Christmas Carol (ca. 1986). I made several appearances as a reader with David Porter, pianist, including alumni meetings in upstate New York and Lake Geneva WI. Other alumni presentations during 1990-1991 include those at Northfield, Los Angeles, Denver, San Francisco, and New York, and in 1998 at Ann Arbor, MI. I talked to an alumni gathering in Ft Myers, FL, on January 30, 1999, and to one in Minneapolis on February 21, 1999.
I joined the Northfield Rotary Club in September, 1993, and have addressed the club on four occasions. I served for several years as chair of its International Scholarship committee, and I served for two years on the District Scholarship Committee (1996-1997). I am now vice-chair of publicity. I was a member of the Northfield Library Board from 1997 until 2000. When I can, I serve as a volunteer for the Northfield Historical Society.
I taught a course on Hamlet for the Cannon Valley Elder Collegium in the spring of 1998 and have served on that organization's advisory committee. This course was featured on April 19, 1998, in the Washington Post (both the internet edition and the regular one--Pages A1, A7); this article also appaeared in The International Herald Tribune. A separate story appeared in the April 24, 1998 editon of The Chronicle of Higher Education, Page A10. In each of these articles I was quoted; The Chronicle published a color picture of me with two students. Since then, I have taught courses on Jane Austen's Emma and George Eliot's Middlemarch, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and John Fowles' The French Lieutenant's Woman, Boswell's Life of Johnson, two novels by Iris Murdoch (The Black Prince and the Book and the Brotherhood), Wordsworth, and Reading and Listening to Poetry (a lecture course).
I appeared on the television program Jeopardy! on July 11, 16, 19, and 20 and again on November 5--all 1990. (The last program was repeated in August, 1991.) I was the champion of the 1990 Senior Tournament. Some of these programs were rebroadcast in various places (Samoa, Berlin) around the world. In this connection, I have been interviewed twice on WCCO-radio (Minneapolis, MN) and once on KJON-radio (St. Cloud, MN).
I was the featured speaker at a public meeting to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Tomah, Wisconsin, Shakespeare Club on April 18, 1994.
I am listed in The Dictionary of American Scholars, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the 21st Century, and Who's Who in The Midwest.
