Course Registration 101

< Previous: The Liberal Arts Philosophy

Highlights

  • You can choose to pre-register for one course early, from a list of first-year seminars and other courses recommended for new students.
  • You'll register for the rest of your courses in August.
  • You'll have a chance to meet with your adviser and make adjustments.

Here's a quick overview of what you'll be registering for as a new student, when and how:

By the time Fall term begins, you'll be registered for 3 academic courses.

This is the typical academic course load at Carleton. You'll register for 3 courses each term (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 9 courses in your first year.

You can also add a physical education course and/or a music lesson in any term.

You can reserve a place in at least one course in advance, via the Pre-Registration Form.

We highly recommend (but do not require) that one of your courses be chosen from the list on the Pre-Registration Form. These are not all the courses available to you, but they are the ones we've designed specifically with first-year students in mind.

You'll complete the rest of your fall term registration online in August.

In August you'll register online for up to three academic courses (minus any already locked in via the Pre-Registration). You can also add P.E. and/or a music lesson if you wish.

You can still make adjustments in September, when you meet with your adviser.

When you arrive on campus in September, you'll meet with a faculty advisor. Your adviser will review your choices and discuss them with you in a one-on-one meeting. You can make changes to your registration after that meeting if you wish.
