Chalice

The Chalice is an all-female Hip Hop collective residing in Minneapolis. [Lizzo, Claire de Lune, Sophia Eris, & DJ Spacebar] Each of the members of the Chalice brought to the table a unique sound and style, and viable, burgeoning solo career. Each woman also originally called somewhere besides the Twin Cities home. Lizzo, a Houston transplant (and multi-talented singer, rapper, and instrumentalist) brings an electric, kick-you-in-the-face Missy Elliot-like energy to the mic and has a swagger that only the South could birth. Sophia Eris, whose famous head-wraps give her the silhouette of an Egyptian queen, came to Minneapolis from Dayton, OH and got her artistic start in the spoken word scene. Her cool-calm-collected, laid back rhyme schemes and earthy style has garnered her comparisons to Erykah Badu. Claire de Lune, the sultry, smoky-voiced soul singer from New York City, got her start in Minneapolis doing guest vocals on songs with artists like MaLLy and The Tribe and Big Cats, and her old-soul sensibilities have earned her comparisons to Amy Winehouse and Joss Stone.

Alum Mihajlo Babovic returns to the Cave. Eclectic white boy rap like a non-preachy Macklemore with some Atmosphere/Nappy Roots type stuff.

15 minute long sets for 13 of your favorite Carleton student bands. The top six from this round will progress on to Battle of the Bands finals 6th Weekend Saturday at the Grand. The finals will determine the top two student bands, who will go on to perform at Spring Concert on 5.25.13.

Show up to support your favorite student bands, as audience participation is a judging criterion.

Convocation speaker poetry performance.

A self-proclaimed "smoothie expert", Sarah Kay's artistry has been featured on TED talks, Def Poetry Jam, and of course CNN.com. She is a spoken word poet and co-founder of Project V.O.I.C.E. After some student openers (who are literally peeing their pants in excitement), Sarah will bring her magestic words to the stage followed by a question and answer session.

Join us for a campus-wide discussion of large, ethically relevant questions and after-dinner snacks. Springterm #bigquestions. Questions include: What is your obligation to humanity? What is your purpose in the world? Are you valuable because of who you are or what you do? Events will be held Tuesdays of 2nd and 6th week in the Carleton Cave from 7-8pm.

Thursday April 11: Matt Yetter

Yetter continues his campus takeover, following a midday performance at Sayles, with some old time blues. Yetter’s lide guitar, harmonica, and a crooner’s golden voice. Come down to the Cave and hear his toe-tapping tunes.

Friday April 12: Spoken Word and Song

Come hear The Accidentals and Intertwining Melodies sing songs from throughout the Movement for Farmworker Rights, and voice your own thoughts on food, the food system, oppression, racism, or anything else relating to food or farmworkers, in an open mic format. If you want to submit anonymously, email burka@carleton.edu, or put your piece in the "Anonymous" folder we'll have at the event.

The Men:

Hitting the road with their new album New Moon, a slightly softer version of their primal post=hardcore sound, the Men are one of the biggest new rock acts. Their new album keeps their high decibel levels, brutally distressing lyrics, and masterful song creation skills. The Men will make your ears and heart cry tears of blood.

Gun Outfit

Vast and intimate driving rock music from Oympia. Dylan Sharp and Carrie Keith harmonize understated songs with some grunge flair. Music for the middle of the night when all the streetlights are burnt out.

Places We Slept

Omaha boys come north with their hard twee and party attitudes. Buzz jams and moody noise.

Zammuto:

Formed from the ashes of beloved oddball collage stars The Books, Zammuto is Nick Zammuto’s debut post-Books project. Zammuto feels like an update to the Books, straying away from samples but keeping the electronic tweaks. Pop hooks ground the music and prevent it from blasting off to another planet. The album is energetic and expressive, and draws from genre influences as diverse as Afrofunk, acid house, disco, and prog-rock. Expect dancing Carls and some noises you’ve never heard before.

Snowblink:

Duo Daniela Gesundheit and Dan Goldman come to the Cave all the way from Toronto, and bring with them their brand of haunting, melodic pop. Daniela’s voice sounds a bit like Feist, if Feist were the goddess leader of the coolest cult in Montana. Dan keeps the beat steady and will keep the crowd in a trance. Their pared-down pop is anything but sparse, instead is filled with intricacies

Witch’s Brew:

Henri Sandifer ’15 is a charismatic frontman for this 4-piece. Peter Briggs ’14 always thrills on electric guitar. Ry Garlow ’14 is rolling thunder on the bass (sometimes upright. We hope upright bass). Curtis Vamarasi ’14 keeps all these boys in check with his steady drums. These guys add their own flair to psychedelic-influenced rock, and are one of the most promising student bands Carleton has to offer these days. Prissy Clerks is a Minneapolis quintet with a 90s influenced drone guitar rock sound. Clara Salyer, with a name a few steps away from Slayer, is the wild frontwoman delivering anthemic lyrics. Their debut record "Bruise or Be Bruised" came out two months ago and rocks all kinds of hard.

Jamming For Justice

Jamming for Justice is a student band festival and benefit concert for the Carleton College FACE AIDS chapter. The concert's set list is focused on themes of social justice and equity, and will features groups such as Ova Yonder, Ashantology, and Carleton Slam Poetry. The concert is free, though we will be selling merchandise and having a raffle. All proceeds from FACE AIDS merchandise and Cave coffee sales throughout the evening will go to Partners in Health, a world-renowned global health NGO.

Ashantology just wants to bring the music back to hip hop + dj britheartbeats just wants to see you dance. In combination, these two different acts bring you #Twerk - a dance party you won't forget.
Ashantology was founded in Northfield and is one of the many amazing student bands on campus. Mixing hip hop freestyles over a live band, 'tology creates a unique sound that won the group the 2012 Battle of the Bands. They've also played all around Northfield from the Reub to High Noon Art. #Twerk is the group's return to the Cave and they can't wait to hit y'all with a G.

dj britheartbeats (Brit Fryer '15) started djing house parties in Chicago two years ago. Aiming to make he audience twerk til' dawn, Brit fuses Jersey Club, Vogue, Top 40, Trap, Hip Hop, and Chicago Juke into bass-filled sets. Accompanying the set will be some of the lovely ladies from Ebony II, choreographed by Laramie Jensen ('15) and Erica Sheline ('15) - who coincidentally named Ashantology in the winter of 2012.

The One Knight Stands are an all-inclusive cabaret troupe. performing everything from Broadway to pop music in two shows a year. This term's show, 90s Nostalgia, features a collection of hits from the 90s, including Britney Spears, Train, and songs from the Disney Renaissance era.
