OLD SOPE INITIATIVES:
Tonight, to share with new members, we discussed old SOPE initiatives. Here's what we talked about...
Composting: We got a grant from the EPA to purchase an Earth Tub, which is a huge composting machine.
Starting SRF: SOPE was instrumental to get SRF (the Sustainability Revolving Fund) started a few years ago.
Lil' Things: The main accomplishment here was getting rid of individual ketchup packets and instead having ketchup served in bulk form.
Earth Day: Last year, SOPE got involved with St. Olaf and Northfield High School to have a community-wide Earth Day event and parade.
Low Flow showerheads: a SRF initiative currently in the works. Low flow showerheads were installed in Goodhue over winter break and feedback is currently being solicited before they are installed campus-wide.
Thrift store: a current task force to make a thrift store on campus to promote reuse among the Carleton community.
Team MN: a statewide conference last term where students from schools all over MN met to discuss environmental issues and initiatives and share ideas.
Powershift: a conference in DC which brings students from all over the country to discuss environmental issues and lobby politicians to focus on climate change. Last year, we sent 7 people and this year hope to send 10.
Vote Yes MN: a MN state constitution amendment on the ballot last November to increase the sales tax to raise money for preservation and conservation of the environment and to promote the arts.
GreenWars: started at Carleton four years ago, this month-long competition has grown to include schools across the country to spend a month working on energy efficiency and environmental awareness.
The college has asked us to come up with ideas that allow the school to save money by saving energy. No idea is too far-fetched. Elizabeth is submitting the list tomorrow, so if overnight you have a great idea, email her at webbe.
see you all next week! Sayles 251 at 9 p.m.!
