Carleton College Summer Teaching Institute 2013
June 25 - 28 and July 9-12
Welcome to the 33rd Annual Carleton College Summer Teaching Institute. The Institute is designed for teachers of existing or proposed Advanced Placement Program*, enriched, or accelerated classes for students in grades 7 through 12 who are capable of college-level work. Since 1980 more than 4,800 teachers from over 660 schools nationwide have attended these week-long workshops. In 2012, we welcomed 464 teachers to our June workshops. These teachers were represented from 26 different states, and we also had 27 international teachers take advantage of our workshop. Teachers who have attended our workshops have loved their experience; so much so, that we had 36% of the total institute as repeats!
Have you heard? Chemistry and Spanish Language are going through a redesign. Spanish Language will now align with the other languages to include culture. The summer workshop will be the first training opportunity to discuss the changes for these subjects. You will also start work on the new syllabus that you will need to submit to be audited. We have added two more workshops that can be taken in July if the June dates do not work for you to help accommodate as many schedules as possible.
Even if you have been teaching your AP* subject for a while, we have courses that will challenge you. We are trying to extend the number of "Advanced Topics" courses we offer at the institute. American Themes is a hybrid model for interdisciplinary learning in English Language and U.S. History while other workshops have been designed around one subject. The Advanced Topics courses will put less emphasis on the AP* exam and more on content that can be used in your class.
Carleton faculty members who are experts in their field are paired with experienced AP* high school teachers in some of our courses. Since a one-week workshop cannot cover all the materials that are taught in a year-long AP* or similar course, our workshops instead provides an in-depth look at select topics.
For the past four years, we have successfully run four-day institutes. We have decided to stay with this format for 2013 and are excited for the new courses we are offering.
We invite you to join high school teachers from across the country (and the world) for this exceptional professional opportunity! We look forward to seeing you this summer. If you would like to see a different course offered, please feel free to contact me as well at firstname.lastname@example.org. I hope to see you at this year’s institute.
