Adding Links

You can link text or images in a page to any other Reason page, to any other page on the web, or to an email address. Here's how:

Linking to a web page that is part of your Reason site

  1. Get to where you can edit the content you want to link from.
  2. Select the text that you want to become a link. For example, in the sentence "Steve Collins works in the Slide Library." you could hightlight the words "Slide Library".
  3. Click on the Insert link icon.
  4. The "Current Site Pages" tab should be highlighted in the popup window.
  5. Choose the page you want to link to in the "Select Pages" dropdown list. (In this example we might choose the Slide Library page.)
  6. (optional): In the "Description" field, you can (if you wish) type in a description of the page you are linking to (in this example, you could type in "The Carleton College Slide Library" into the field.)
  7. Click "OK." The link window should go away, and the text you highlighted earlier will be a link! You can now save the item.

Linking to an external web page

  1. Find out the Web address (URL) of the site or page want to link to. For example, if you want to link to the Habitat for Humanity website, you could do a search to find that website. Once you have found it, you probably want to copy the web address listed at the top of your browser (which in this example will be http://www.habitat.org/).
  2. Get to where you can edit the content you want to link from.
  3. Select the text that you want to become a link. For example, in the sentence "Steve Collins volunteers for Habitat for Humanity on the weekends." you would highlight the words "Habitat for Humanity".
  4. Click on the Insert link icon.
  5. Click on the "Custom" tab in the popup window.
  6. Paste or type in the web address you copied earlier into the "Enter URI" field. Make sure you don't have the "http://" portion repeated twice; this can happen because that is pre-entered in the "Enter URL" field.
  7. (optional): In the "Description" field, you can (if you wish) type in a description of the page you are linking to.
  8. Click "OK." The link window should go away, and the text you highlighted earlier will be a link. You can now save the item.
  9. Make sure the link works by going to the public site and testing the link.

Linking to an email address

  1. Select the text that you want to become a link.
  2. Click on the Insert link icon.
  3. Click on the "Custom" tab in the popup window.
  4. Paste or type in the email address
  5. (optional): In the "Description" field, you can type a description of the link, such as "Send XX an email."
  6. Click "OK." The link window should go away, and the text you highlighted earlier will be a link. You can now save the item.
  7. Make sure the link works by going to the public site and testing the link.
