About Media Flies and Media Works

Reason has two content types for media: Media Files and Media Works. To understand the difference between them think of a picture, a picture frame, and a wall. A picture (the media file) needs to be placed in a picture frame (the media work) before it can be hung on a wall (your page).

The standard way to place media on your site is to add a media file, attach it to a media work, and then attach the media work to a page. You can also embed a video into a page or news post without using a media work.

Adding Media Files

The following media files can be uploaded to Reason: .mp3, .rm, .mp4, .mov, .swf, .wmv, .wma, .mpg, .mpeg, .aiff, .wav, .avi, .flv, and .m4v.

  1. Click Media Files from the Content Types menu.
  2. Click Add Media File.
  3. Enter a Name for your Media File.
  4. Choose a File Location by one of the following methods:
    • Upload File: Click Choose a file... and select the file from its location on your hard drive or server.
    • Provide the address of a file already on the web: If the video is on the web (on YouTube or Vimeo, for example), copy the URL of the video and paste it here.
  5. Fill out important File Info about your media:
    • For video files, you will need to specify the width and height of the video. To determine the width and height of a file, open it in a player and find "get movie info," "clip info," or a similar menu option.
  6. Click Save and Finish. The media file is complete and now it must be associated with a Media Work before placing it onto a web page.

Adding Media Works

  2. Click Add Media Work at the top of the form.
  3. The only field on this page that is required to fill out is the title of the media work.
