Living Legacy

BS-Wellstone-Photo.jpgThe Carleton community honored the memory of former professor and U.S. senator Paul Wellstone on the 10th anniversary of his death in October.

Jeff Blodgett ’83, executive director of Wellstone Action, spoke on Wellstone’s legacy of civic engagement in a keynote address at Skinner Memorial Chapel.

Pam Costain ’72 reflected on Wellstone’s teaching in an article she wrote for MinnPost, an online news site. “We flocked to his classes, mesmerized by his stories of real people organizing to change the world. Paul instilled in us the belief that the purpose of an educated person is to make the world a better place.”

Alumni also left tributes to Wellstone on Carleton’s Facebook page:

  • “I interned for him in D.C. He always remembered me and what I was doing for years after.” —Joe Cardamone ’94
  • “Paul was my teacher and mentor. He taught me that even one person can make a difference in this world.” —Krysti Hughett ’81
  • “I got more involved because of him. It helped to get organized, not just angry.” —Sonia Jacobson ’75
