Sleet (Is Fun To Run Around In)

October 23, 2009 at 10:54 am

It's Friday, this post is three days past due, but I'm done with all my midterms!

My parents came up last weekend for Parents' Weekend, so I saw them for the first time since mid-August, that was really nice.

Students seemed to have a wide variety of motivation for their excitement for Parents' Weekend. Some were eagerly anticipating a trip to the Mall of America, others were looking forward to the warm winter clothes their parents promised to bring, and many were excited to play tour guide and show off the campus to Mom and Dad. I personally enjoyed a shower in their hotel room, a trip to Trader Joe's, my mom's expert technique at putting my duvet cover on my comforter, and a meal at Kurry Kabob.  Mainly though, it was nice to have my parents here and to talk to them for a while about things at home, things at school, that wouldn't necessarily come up over ten minute study-break phone calls.

On a different note: care packages! Care packages are not something I was actively excited about before coming to college. I had no idea the immense pleasure it would bring to look in my mailbox and find a small plastic card indicating I received a box, and yet here I am, sitting with a cardboard package on my bed and five or six girls from my floor crowded around, waiting to see what's inside. This one was from my grandma - she called yesterday, almost unable to control her excitement at what I would find in the box when I got it. Presents from Grandma are always an adventure (during preseason she sent me a package with a necklace and lots of chocolate and cookies - "see?" she said, "you can wear it all!"), but nothing prepared me for this staring out of the foam peanuts:

Welcome, Halloween!

I have to know: Does it talk?

No - but it screams. And shakes. And the eyes light up red.
