Frostbite & Feminism

Brrrr! 'Tis the season for added layers! (And when is it not a good season for feminist activism?)

Brrrr! 'Tis the season for added layers! (And when is it not a good season for feminist activism?)

As I realize how fast this term is going (!!!) and how I am almost halfway done until I leave for winter break (!!!!!!!!!!), I enjoy reflecting on my weeks that way things don’t escape my mind.

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of eating dinner and discussing immigration rights with my Queer, Questioning, and Trans People of Color (QTPOC) buddies and Jennicet Gutiérrez. She is notable for interrupting President Barack Obama during a White House LGBT pride event about the detainment of trans Latina women. During her presentation, we got to hear her story and learn about how to become better activists. Jennicet really reminded me about the importance of discourse about personal/controversial things and how by bringing them to attention people can change.

And speaking of activism, something I need to voice concern for is this WEATHER. I was so ill-prepared this week for 30 degree nights, especially at ValleyScare (an amusement park 40 minutes away from Carleton). I scored free tickets through the Student Activities Office and went on some radical rollercoasters, screamed in a haunted house, and of course ate the fair food. I was grateful for every moment spent inside or entertained by rides, because otherwise my toesies would’ve fallen off.

Regardless, I’m grateful for purple leaves & being able to wear cute scarves and jackets.

Stay cute,

Sergio Jones

Sergio hails from Tucson, Arizona, a land where everyone adopts several cacti for pets, and eggs are fried to perfection on sidewalks from consistent 100+° F temperatures. That said, his interests include rock climbing, foreign films, and vegan/vegetarian cooking (and is always looking for treats in his mailbox). He is a potential Cinema & Media Studies or Political Science major who hopes to spread equality & activism through mixed media. Read on to meet the rest of our bloggers.
