Hi lovelies,

This past weekend was the first round of Admitted Students Day, so congratulations to all the students who got accepted and all of those who applied (because that takes effort and passion)!

I was unable to host a prospective student, but meeting my friend’s prospies strung chords in my heart: I love Carleton. I loved sharing tidbits of information and history of different buildings with these potential students. So, I will be sharing some details of this week at Carleton through a small photo diary.

– The Minnesota weather has a mind of its own this spring; random days bring raindrops and earthworm-filled sidewalks. Apparently, when it rains the earthworm homes are flooded, so they rise to avoid drowning. Other days, however, 70 degrees warm the buildings and students are grilling or eating meals outside. I attached one picture of some pretty purple flowers I found after leaving my Women’s & Gender Studies class. I also added a photo of the calm before a teeny rainstorm.

– Andrea Jenkins, a black trans poet and oral historian, came to perform excerpts from her book “The T is Not Silent” at The Cave. It was not only empowering to identify with stories about resilience and survival, but also to envision a future of successful queer people of color pursuing art. Her work outside of poetry is with the University of Minnesota where she documents stories from queer individuals about poverty, medical care, marginalization, hunger. These interviews are archived for the use of filmmakers, painters, poets, historians, which shows positive strides toward queer visibility.

– FaceTiming my little brother and hearing from my family is always such a highlight. Someday I would love to take him around the little parks Northfield has to offer. My mom also still calls almost every other day, which isn’t as embarrassing as you may think! It’s precious that my family has provided me space to grow and develop as an adult, and for that I’m forever grateful.

Stay cute,

Sergio Demara

Sergio hails from Tucson, Arizona, a land where everyone adopts several cacti for pets, and eggs are fried to perfection on sidewalks from consistent 100+° F temperatures. That said, his interests include rock climbing, foreign films, and vegan/vegetarian cooking (and is always looking for treats in his mailbox). He is a potential Cinema & Media Studies or Political Science major who hopes to spread equality & activism through mixed media. Read on to meet the rest of our bloggers.
