It’s already week 8. Time has passed by way faster than I could have imagined, and I have enjoyed every moment of it. I’ve been lucky enough to get to know some great people over the last couple months, but none more influential than the seniors on the soccer team. As our season draws to a close, and as we enter playoffs, I unfortunately will be playing my last few games with them. I can’t describe how much of an impact the seniors of the team have had on the other freshman and me. As good and as dominant as they are on the field, they are even more influential off the field.
We came to Carleton before everyone else in the middle of August as recent high school grads, with little knowledge of what college would be like. The seniors on the team immediately made us feel accepted, and the transition from high school to college was easier than I ever could have imagined. They showed us around, introduced us to the rest of the team, were more than willing to answer any questions that we had (we had a lot of questions), and genuinely cared about us as people. And as the season progressed, we all became close friends. We will definitely remain close for a long time, but the bond we have as teammates during the main season can never be matched. My first season as a college athlete has made me more appreciative of the people I have around me; time really passes by fast and it’s important to enjoy every moment.
I won’t forget how influential the seniors were on me, and I hope to have a similar impact on the freshman when I’m an upperclassman on the team. Baisch, Donny, Aiden, Jacko, and Coby, this is for you guys. I can’t thank you guys enough for everything you’ve done for me.
Alvin is a west coast kid at heart (coming from San Jose, California), but is excited to start many adventures here in Minnesota. He plays for the soccer team here at Carleton and loves exercise. If he’s not on the soccer field, in the gym, or out on a bike ride during his free time, he can be found in one of the lounges playing Exploding Kittens, or in the music building playing piano. He is a potential economics major with an interest in computer science and mathematics.
