It's 2018!

It’s a little late, but happy New Year everyone! I hope all of you had a wonderful break; I certainly had a great time back home. I didn’t do anything particularly noteworthy, but I was able to spend a lot of precious time with family and high school friends. I remember sitting on the beach on New Year’s day, in 75 degree weather, not looking forward to leaving sunny California and facing the harsh Minnesota winter which I had heard so much about. Although, after spending a week here, I can say that I’m very happy to be back at Carleton.

I’ve actually enjoyed the weather very much so far; there is a lot to do outside, and the campus is extremely beautiful when covered in snow. It hasn’t gotten too cold (yet!), and I’m hoping the wind stays as calm as it has been over the last few days. Since I’ve been back, I’ve gone sledding and ice skating for the first time, and I can’t wait to try cross country skiing. There is a lot to do here that I’m not able to experience at home, and I’m looking forward to taking advantage of everything Minnesota has to offer.

Classes have gone well so far and I’m excited for the academic term. It felt surprisingly natural to jump straight back into classes, and I like all my professors and the course material has been interesting, especially in computer science. I’ve been extremely busy over the last few days, but I believe that this term will offer various fantastic opportunities and I’m very optimistic for what is to come.

Alvin is a west coast kid at heart (coming from San Jose, California), but is excited to start many adventures here in Minnesota. He plays for the soccer team here at Carleton and loves exercise. If he’s not on the soccer field, in the gym, or out on a bike ride during his free time, he can be found in one of the lounges playing Exploding Kittens, or in the music building playing piano. He is a potential economics major with an interest in computer science and mathematics.
