Students at all levels of experience are welcome in the department, which offers a wide variety of courses in music history, literature, theory, analysis, composition, ethnomusicology, and performance. Venues and resources include a 500-seat concert hall with a 55-rank Holtkamp organ, a Van Daalen Positiv organ, and two Steinway concert grand pianos. Private instruction is available in voice, piano, organ, guitar, each section of the orchestra, and the pipa, erhu, sitar, lute, viola da gamba, recorder, and harpsichord. Performance groups include an orchestra, symphony band, vocal ensembles, and jazz, Karimba, Mbira, and African Drum ensembles.
