Travel Subsidy Information

We're delighted that you'd like to visit campus! Our Admissions Office has some limited financial resources to help support travel to campus. Read on to learn more information about making the most of your visit to campus.

Already approved for a travel subsidy? Submit your receipts!

How can I qualify for a travel subsidy?

We make the offer available to specific students, including some who come from underrepresented backgrounds, and some whose families may not have the means to afford to cover the full cost of a student's visit before choosing Carleton.  Please contact us if you have questions about this initiative.

Some students are pre-approved for a travel subsidy.

These students receive a travel coupon in the mail. For example, we make this offer to QuestBridge College Prep Scholars. Another example: some admitted students receive this information in their acceptance packet. Does this sound familiar? Great! You're pre-approved. You can schedule your visit, make your travel plans, and submit your receipt. We’ll process your reimbursement after your visit.

Not sure if you received a coupon in the mail? Know you definitely didn’t?

If you would like to be considered for one of our travel subsidies, please complete this application. If you are depending on our travel subsidy to support your travel to campus, you should wait to make any travel arrangements until you have received approval of your request.

When do I receive the subsidy?

We offer travel subsidies to some high school seniors in the fall, as well as some admitted students in the spring.

  • If you're approved to use a travel subsidy to visit campus in the summer, fall, or early winter, please complete your travel and submit your receipt by January 15
  • If you're approved to use a travel subsidy to visit campus as an admitted student, please complete your travel and submit your receipt by May 1

You can submit your receipt as soon as you’ve made your travel plans. We encourage you to upload a PDF or Word Doc of your receipt(s) through our online form. You can also leave your receipt(s) at the front desk when you visit. We'll process your reimbursement after you visit. Keep in mind it might take 4-6 weeks for the check to arrive.

Regardless of who paid for the travel, we are required to issue a check in the name of the prospective student. We trust that if you are receiving help from someone else to pay for your travel, you will endorse the check to them.

If our reimbursement timeline presents a challenge to you, please contact us to see if there are any alternatives.

Submit your receipts!

What can my travel subsidy go towards?

We have different levels of subsidy that we can offer. Given the finite resources we can allocate, we will reimburse some portion of the following costs:

  • your ticket on a plane, bus, or train
  • mileage (if you drive)

We are not able to reimburse any of the following costs:

  • checked bag fees
  • meals while traveling
  • wifi
  • hotel
  • trip insurance
  • family member travel

If you received multiple travel coupons, please note that we cannot combine coupon offers. If you have questions about what your travel subsidy will cover, please contact us before arranging your travel.

What can I do during a visit to campus?

We welcome visitors throughout the year. With the exception of college-wide holidays, our office is open Monday-Friday, with some limited Saturday mornings, too. The actual activities you can participate in will vary depending on when you visit.

You are welcome to schedule your visit before you have been approved for a travel subsidy. Please note that our confirmation of your visit does not indicate that you have been approved for travel subsidy. If you are depending on our travel subsidy to support your travel to campus, you should wait to make any travel arrangements until you have received approval of your request.

How do I actually get to campus?

We hope it's no surprise that we aren't next door to the airport. Our campus is located in the charming historic river town of Northfield, about 45 minutes south of MSP Airport. There are daily buses between the Twin Cities and campus. Read on to learn more about how to actually get to campus.
