Radiocarbon Dating and The Dead Sea Scrolls

The measurement of the age of ancient objects such as the Dead Sea Scrolls is very important to understanding their origin. One of the most important tools for this purpose is radiocarbon dating, which can be used to determine the age of various ancient objects made from organic material, such as parchment, wood, canvas, bone and paper.

Dr. Jull will discuss the usefulness of this method and its applications, with an emphasis on the dating of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Dr. Jull is a Professor of Geosciences at the University of Arizona, and is Director of the NSF-Arizone AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectrometry) Facility. A British native, he trained in chemistry at the University of British Columbia and in geochemistry at the University of Bristol, with postdoctoral studies at Bristol, the University of Cambridge, and the Max-Planck-Institut für Chemie at Mainz, Germany.

Directions: We will meet at 1:30 p.m. at the entrance to the Globe Rehearsal Halls. This entrance is at the back of the Mengei Museum. If you come through the Alcazar Parking Lot, look to your right and you’ll see a small sign on a pole indicating the space. There will be balloons up and a person posted there to make sure people can find it. If you have questions the day of the event, call Chris Larson.

Southbound from I-5: Take the 10th Avenue Exit off I-5. Turn left on “A” Street and left again on Park Blvd. Follow the signs to Balboa Park. Northbound from I-5: Take the B Street/Pershing Exit off I-5 to Pershing Street. Take Pershing and then left on Zoo Place to Park Blvd. Left on Park Blvd. Southbound from Hwy 163: Take the Park Blvd. Exit off Hwy 163. Turn left o Park Blvd. Follow the signs to Balboa Park.
