Saturday, April 19, 2008, 8 p.m.

Ted Mann Concert Hall, University of Minnesota

2128 4th Street South, Minneapolis

Gao Hong, Carleton’s adjunct instructor in Chinese Musical Instruments, is the world’s most respected and honored player of the pipa, a pear-shaped lute. This year marks her 35th anniversary as a performer and 10th year as a composer, as well as the completion of her 7-year-old daughter’s treatment for leukemia. Gao Hong will be celebrating these milestones with an international tour that includes this performance. She will be joined by an all-star cast of musicians in a multicultural concert celebrating the triumphs of cancer survivors, and honoring people who have lost their battles with cancer.

"Celebration – The Music of Gao Hong" will feature Gao Hong performing her own compositions with Japanese taiko master Kenny Endo; Shubhendra Rao on sitar;rising young tabla star Biplab Bhattacharya; The Rochester Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jere Lantz, and the Minghua Chorus. Also featured will be the premiere performances of two recently established new music ensembles – Intersection, comprised of Carleton and St Olaf music faculty featuring Nicola Melville on piano, David Hagedorn on percussion, Jun Qian on clarinet , and Gao Hong on pipa; and an all-female ensemble featuring cellist Michelle Kinney; Gao Hong on pipa; and Indian vocalist and veena player Nirmala Rajasekar. Included in the program will be three world premieres of pieces composed by Gao Hong, as well the rare world premiere of a traditional Chinese pipa piece lost for decades and recently reconstructed and passed on to Gao by her late teacher, pipa master Lin Shicheng.

In addition to her April 19 concert, Gao Hong’s tour will also feature performances at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, New York City, and at Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, China.
